Best known as the banjo virtuoso in his father’s group, the Del McCoury Band, Rob McCoury is well-known in his own right, having been nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) Banjo Player of the Year a number of times. He and his brother Ronnie, the mandolin player in their father’s band, recorded a duo album that won the 1996 IBMA Instrumental Album of the Year award. He was one of many bluegrass musicians who played with Phish in Antioch, TN on 6/22/00, playing on “Harry Hood,” “I’m Blue, I’m Lonesome,” “Hold Whatcha Got,” “Uncle Pen” and “Freebird.”
